Today, Navarro was pleased to announce that House Democrats have reached out to her to work on her bill. Rep. Navarro hopes to introduce a bipartisan measure next week.
“Providing our students and educators with the opportunities they need to succeed is a goal that crosses partisan lines,” Navarro, R-Pueblo, said. “I look forward to working with Rep. Crisanta Duran to improve Colorado’s English language learners’ program.”
Today in Colorado, only one percent of students in English language learning programs reach proficiency within two years. Despite this statistic, funding for a student with limited proficiency in English is provided for only two years under the English Language Proficiency Act. Navarro hopes to correct this disparity through the legislation this session.
“House Republicans have been working with the Department of Education since early October on ways we can increase the speed at which non-English learners become proficient in English,” House Minority Leader Mark Waller, R-Colorado Springs, added. “There is consensus on this issue and we look forward to working together to accomplish this goal.”
