Commend McDonalds for Providing Language Education to English Learner Employees By Drena Crevfore Target: McDonalds Corporation

Goal: Commend McDonalds for providing non-English speakers the English training they need to succeed in higher positions

McDonalds has developed and launched an English learning program called English Under the Arches in order to provide non-English speakers with the language skills they need in order to get promoted.  The program, taught by local community college teachers, is centered on business communications and trains employees in shift basics, shift conversation, shift writing, and conduct performance reviews.  Each course lasts for 8 to 22 weeks and is provided free of charge to the employee.

In order to provide this training in the most convenient way possible, McDonalds holds most of these classes online.  Every few weeks, there is an in-person class, but most of the practicing is done on the job.

So far, 44 McDonald’s locations have offered this program, with 2,500 employee graduates.  84 percent of employees in the program have advanced at least one level on their English proficiency tests, and 95 percent of employees have increased their wages.  The courses have also improved retention rates. Many employees reported that they feel more confident talking to customers and that they believe the program has opened up more possibilities for their future.

By signing this petition you will help thank McDonalds for providing free English training to English learner employees to maximize their potential and chances of getting promoted to a managerial position.
